Homer
c. 8th century BCE

Homer (c. 8th century BCE) was an ancient Greek poet who is credited as the author of The Iliad and [[The Odyssey]]. However, modern scholars do not believe that there was a single author behind the two works.
Balot writes:
When we speak of individual poets, such as “[[Theogenis]],” or “Homer,” or “Hesiod,” we are in fact speaking of poetic personae — that is, figures in whose name many later bards composed poetry in oral performance.1
